Timothy Lynch dies in police custody.
April 30, 1871
(April) A member of a crowd that had gathered in East Boston when police attempted to arrest another man, Lynch was injured when he was arrested. He was found unconscious in his cell the next morning and died a few hours later at Boston City Hospital. The coroner’s jury subsequently exonerates the police, but citizens protest. The case eventually fades from public attention, but not before a judge calls on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to define “reasonable force.”
